The Sea Erosion

Shot no 1 : view of sunset,

Sea erosion is one of the major issues in the Sri Lankan coastal belt. The worst affected area is Negombo which is losing between 5 and 10 m annually.

This erosion condition has an impact on Sri Lanka annually during monsoon periods and thus sea erosion has increased due to the rough seas that have been triggered through these conditions as well as the unpredictable weather patterns.

The coastal erosion directly has an impact on civilians and fisheries. The affected people live in the temperory shacks and some of them are suffering without sanitation and malnutrition.

Due to the sea erosion the fish consistency is reducing daily and the fishing folk said that they are greatly affected by this reduction.

Now the problem takes on a tourism as well. Along with loss of land ,goes a loss of luxury hotels and resthouses built on the beaches.

The government in Sri Lanka is now engaged with coastal conservation department for building stone barriers which will result minimizing the erosion. We hope that will be a solution to this enormous problem facing their poor fishing community, tourist resorte and hotels in this area.
